What Is the Function of a Dredge Draghead? What Parameters Need to Be Confirmed for Selection?
The draghead is a critical underwater operational component of trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHD) or related suction dredging equipment. It contacts the underwater seabed or riverbed, guiding silt, sand, or other dredged materials into the suction inlet, which are then transported to the hopper or other locations via the suction pipe.
The actual operational performance of a draghead depends on soil conditions, suction flow rate, dredging speed, working depth, and structural configuration. Soft silt, fine sand, dense sand layers, and clay in different projects have varying requirements for the draghead structure and auxiliary systems.
When selecting or replacing a draghead, it is recommended to provide: dredger brand and model; original draghead model or drawing number; suction pipe diameter; connection type between draghead and suction pipe; working depth; underwater soil conditions; vessel operational speed; pump flow rate and suction conditions; whether high-pressure water jetting systems are equipped; whether hydraulic or mechanical adjustment mechanisms are configured; draghead weight and lifting capacity limitations; and original product drawings and photographs.
Wear areas of the draghead may include the working surfaces contacting the seabed, suction inlet, wear plates, connectors, and moving parts. The actual scope of wear parts should be confirmed based on the specific product structure.
During operation, if there is a drop in suction concentration, increased resistance, reduced operational efficiency, or abnormal draghead posture, inspections should be conducted for changes in soil conditions, suction inlet clogging, wear parts, connection structures, and related control systems.
