Ceramic, metal, and rubber slurry pumps are all used to transport media containing solid particles, but different materials are suited to distinct particle conditions, temperatures, impact levels, and chemical environments.
Ceramic wet-end parts are typically suitable for specific highly abrasive, fine-particle slurries, with their primary advantage being exceptional wear resistance. Before application, particle impact, size, and foreign debris in the medium must be evaluated to avoid using ceramic components directly in heavy-impact conditions for which they are not suited.
Metal wet-end parts are generally suitable for slurries with larger particles, stronger impact, or widely varying operating conditions. Different metallic materials vary in wear resistance, impact resistance, and corrosion resistance, and should be selected based on the actual medium.
Rubber wet-end parts can be used for abrasive slurries with fine particles within a certain range, and can also suit some corrosive media depending on the rubber compound. Rubber materials require specific verification of temperature, oil content in the medium, chemical composition, and sharp particle conditions.
Key factors to compare during selection include: maximum particle size; particle hardness and sharpness; presence of impact in the medium; solids content and density; medium temperature; pH value and chemical composition; pump speed and operating point; wear part replacement methods; on-site maintenance and spare parts conditions. No single material is suitable for all slurries. The most reliable approach is to conduct material evaluation based on on-site media, wear patterns of existing pumps, and operational data.
